Interview with an author of Open Access book: Professor Oleg Tarnopolsky

Professor Oleg Tarnopolsky is a Doctor of Pedagogy and Head of Department of Applied Linguistics and Methods of Foreign Language Teaching at Alfred Nobel University, Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine. Professor Oleg Tarnopolsky recently published “Constructivist Blended Learning Approach to Teaching English for Specific Purposes” in Open Access model. On this occasion Open Science conducted a short interview with the professor about publishing in OA.

Why did you decide to publish your book in Open Access?

I believe it is the most democratic way of publishing very useful for scholars and academics who want to have their ideas known and disseminated as widely as possible because more people can access them – having no need to pay for the access.

Publishing in Open Access involves APCs costs. What was the source of funds to cover them?

I was one of the first to publish with Versita in Open Access format. This is why the publishers waived those costs for me, and I greatly appreciate that.

What problems did you meet throughout the publishing process?

Actually, it all went quite smoothly. I don’t remember any real problems in the publication process.

 In your opinion, what are the biggest advantages of publishing in this model?

I have already mentioned them. It is much wider dissemination of the author’s ideas and research results – which is especially important if those ideas are innovative and ground-breaking.

And disadvantages?

The author does not get any financial remuneration.

Do you think that Open Access increases the visibility and level of citations?

I do believe that – it was one of my reasons why I decided to publish my book in Open Access.

Do you think that Open Access contributes to the development of science? Or maybe on the contrary?

Yes, I believe that it contributes to the development of science.

 

Professor Oleg Tarnopolsky’s fields of interest are: English in intercultural communication; World Englishes, International English, and English as a Lingua Franca. He also develops project method and using role plays/simulations in teaching English; using computers and other technologies in teaching English; constructivism, experiential, and content-based approach in teaching English; English immersion programs.
